New Resources for Newspaper Research

Extra, extra, read all about it! Burlington Public Library is excited to launch two new online tools on Wednesday, August 6, just in time for Burlington Heritage Week.

Whether you're tracing family roots in local newspapers or looking into the history of a Burlington business, these resources make researching the past simpler and more accessible than ever.

Burlington Newspaper Index

Our refreshed Burlington Newspaper Index will help you find important announcements from our local papers in record time. Instead of flipping through multiple newspapers or scrolling through microfilm, you can now simply search this online index by a person’s name.

The index, now available on the Burlington Digital Archive, spans the years 1899 to 2015 and includes over 33,000 entries. Each entry provides the date, page number, and newspaper title in which they appear, so you can quickly locate the exact newspaper article in our microfilm collection or online databases.

The index is split into four categories based on the type of announcement:

  • Anniversary announcements
  • Birth announcements
  • Death notices and obituaries
  • Engagement, marriage, and wedding announcements

Browse the Burlington Digital Archive anytime from anywhere. You don’t need a library card or login to use this online resource.

Search The Burlington Post Online

Looking for an old article in The Burlington Post? You can now access newly digitized editions of the newspaper on Newspapers.com—free with your Burlington Public Library card. The archive includes full issues of The Post from 1968 to 1980 and 2012 to 2023, with plans to add issues from 1981 to 2011 in the future.

Search by keywords and narrow (filter) your results by date to easily find articles that match your topic or interest. This is the perfect resource if you are trying to locate an article you were featured in or tracking down your grandparents’ wedding announcement.

Here's how the digital newspaper looks on a desktop computer. The top news story on November 18, 1970, was about Burlington Public Library!
