The CEO's Corner - Summer 2024

Summer at the library is our favourite season for leisure reading! We have plenty on offer to help you make the most of the long sunny days. Take a look at some new and exciting things happening at BPL as we dive into this vibrant season.

Big Savings for Burlington

The numbers are in! Burlington residents saved $22,976,214 by borrowing physical books and items from the library in 2023. The community borrowed in record-breaking numbers, with over 1 million physical books borrowed. This is a huge milestone to celebrate the love of reading we share in the Burlington community.

Check out our 2023 Annual Report to learn more about the Library’s impact on the community. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who visited and borrowed from the library—you made this possible.

Summer Reading Club Blasts Off

BPL branches are bustling with kids and teens participating in hands-on space-themed activities as part of Summer Reading Club (SRC). SRC is an annual celebration of the fun and value of reading at public libraries across Canada, with support from TD Bank. And it’s free to join!

We know that kids who read throughout the summer maintain or improve their literacy skills, feed their curiosity and imagination, and learn new things. SRC runs until August 18, so there’s still time to sign up and rocket into a summer of reading adventures.

New Board Game Collection

Building on the success of our new puzzle collection last year, we’re expanding our recreational offerings even further. I am excited to share that BPL members can now borrow from our new collection of board games! There are twenty board games to choose from, including family favourites and new games to discover.

Spotlight on Burlington’s Winning Writers

Burlington writers rose to the challenge this spring with our annual Write Here Write Now contest! A huge congratulations to the nine outstanding winners from different age groups in the short story, poem, and comic categories. I wholeheartedly encourage you to read their creative works. I hope you’ll be as impressed as I am by the exceptional imagination and quality of their work.
